Dreamt

that i was in Beijing, there were 7 or 8 people, all sculptors, they were the people at symposium, and Beijing was in a state of re-construction, as such, we were waiting at a square for a bus and light snow was falling. Through the construction sites, as many old walls were removed. We could see the golden ancient door gates, columns very beautiful one layer after another. I said to friends that take a pic take a pic, next year when all the constructions are finished you will not see this anymore, everything will be covered up. They said oh yes yes, and began taking pictures. Some peoples cameras are tired - no battery - and i took out mine, which was fully charged but, i forgot to turn it off last picture and the battery is at zero. But i helped others take pics.

all this fuss, suddenly something fell from the sky and ended right on my lips. My lips were closed, it just somehow fell plop right on my lips... it was two grains like coffee bean, very bitter i spit out this stuff ... and turns out to be bird shit.

the whole lighting waS beautiful, it was lHeure bleue but early in the morning.

i woke up then.

Bande Dessinee Swann Days in Sl

Loustal, Amélie Nothomb, Miss Pas Touche, Silence of Lorna, Wall-e, Filth and Virtue, Chasseur de Dragon

Amélie Nothomb, writer of Japanese gal working in an office made into a movie. Guest editor of a freebie newspaper for one day. She says she would like to have one of her fiction made into BD - lianhuanhua - sequential picture book.
Here is the artist she would like to work with.

Other BD I discovered at MK2 Bibliotheque BD bookstore:

Le silence de Lorna, 3.5*

profound, good tension in the movie, characters well developed. We feel that Lorna who seemed so free and positive from the beginning is actually in a prison. The ending is not surprising, a slow fade out of someone going to sleep and what happens next? She gets killed, found by the mafiso... we dont know... but how about showing more? why always this slow fade out of indetermined outcome? We know how slow fadeouts work, how about another manner/kind of ending?

Filth and virtue by Madonna 2.5*

Story telling a la Madonna, quickie all vignettes. She doesnt take time to work over the surface and textures of things. When the dancer Holly is such a good material - why not some real full sequence of her dancing? For example when she was dressed as a school girl? And the Juliette character - there is much more stories to be told between the Juliette and her sister - stories implied but not entered into. The material is rich and has a lot of potential of being fleshed out. Saw an interview of Madonna in Youtube about this making this movie. She is very open about how she makes this movie. Its not bad, but like a news item, she tells her tale, quickly good paced, sketchy skipping - all the yummy parts of the tale. A waste for Holly. She is so porcelain pretty - thanks to the make up sponsor -

Wall e 3.5* by Pixar studio

the story is imaginative. Graphics slick and beautiful. Sentiments are old. The world presented doesnt change much from any old animation film for feeling healthy and good. I like the part where Wall e collects all kinds of trash to be recycled as a personal laboratory. Just like in any sci-fi fiction always with this one wizard who could repair everything using fish eyes or slimy bottles of guck...

Chasseur de Dragon 2.5* story, 4* for graphics beauty, artist : Qwak

Story is banal and not original, but the graphics are so beautiful! French aesthetic.

Gomorra  4*

Very realistic, human type of film making.  Documentary style.

I noticed the section about the Haute Couture assistant, how he was invited by a Chinese clothing studio head, Xian, to teach 10 lessons, at 2000euros per lesson - a huge amount of money.  We know, the Chinese studio has to survive, it means a lot to them.  They do it by learning from someone who knows, and they call the chef d'atelier, Maestro... he was so happy with this, money, recognition and also human daily exchanges (not so common when you are in a mafio housing project always under stress from everywhere).

When the chef d'atelier enters the Chinese atelier, we see them cooking fish and drinking alcohol from plastic cups.  And a soft music by Teresa Tang, story from a small town - such a huge contrast with the outside world.  Here the Chinese immigrants made a little world of softness, sewing, eating.  Gentle people.  Never the less, they know it is very dangerous to have secret lessons from the Italian master.  They put him in the trunk of the car so that nobody sees him travelling to the work shop.

The Xian guy tells him about Tai-Chi, invites him to a homecooked meals - treats him like a treasured friend.  At the shop they hired a simultaneous translator, with a good large video screen.  Everything prepared for serious learning, for an honoured teacher!  Not some fly by night joint that people imagine what sweat shops are like in most Chinatown themed movies.  This part of the film reveals something very kindly from the directors point of view.  And he shows how the chef d'atelier actually loves his job in the way he touches the dresses, hangs it carefully on the hanger - all this is done without much dialogue, but we see it.  Then he was attacked, lost his job and became a truck driver.  He watched on tv at a lunch place off the road, Scarlett Johannsson wearing the Haute couture dress that he made.  Then he jumps back into the truck and drives off.  He had to change profession after they discovered his secret teachiing job.  The power of this movie I think is in the treatment of the other.  We have the main stream local people and the immigrant.  The main stream "do good" money guys and the underdog, the black people the underage kids are called to drive the trucks around - the ruthlessness of the ones in power.  You save one guy and kills a whole village, mean while lots of money in the pocket.  At the end, the end credit quickly mentions the collaboration of construction in Ground Zero project by these same do good strong men.  Hard film.  Well made.

Maybe movie goer are stronger these days, they can stand to see the truth.  They want to see documentaries, documentary like films of the world.  They dont need embellished lies - tired of them when the reality is all around, clear as day.

Rhumba  2* (for the film), 3* (for the dedication to an aesthetic of the film)

A totally silly story line.  How could the director waste the talented dancing opportunity?  We only get to watch some arms and legs and thats it?  The rest is pure silliness, fire in the house, car accident... red dress undone by some little accident... silliness thats not even funny.  Amateur like the story is weak and unoriginal.  However, the colors, the lighting, the set design are all in a retro 50s color theme.  Very pleasant.  But inspite of this, the movie really fails.  Hardly watchable.

I feel like kicking the movie maker.  How could you ruin this wonderful oppportunity for both stars just like this?

shanghai, chinatown (tv documentary series)

humongous housing estates, but the guards are so smiley and nice.
whats wonderful is that there are small shops just outside, this morning i walked by and heard the children marching to traditional chinese tunes... just like in Antonioni documentary. children all have their red triangular scarves... they tend to be slightly plump, overweight. My experience here of children around age 10 is truly monster like! Due to the grand parents. I have never seen any child so spoilt and rude. But the grand parent take it all with a smile.

i would not want to baby sit such a child.

otherwise, everything is convenient, and Shanghai has energy. All these designer clothes at all levels, simple local clothings and imports, all fashion conscious. Much more interesting than HK.

sl remains to be nostalgic for me. I see it as a good teaching platform, but the initial 6 months i spent here gives me much fond memories - just like real life. :)

Chinatown **** (tv documentaries)

saw Chinatown the tv documentary series, sooooo gooood. Chinatowns in the world - everywhere from Nepal to Malaysia, to Russia, to NorthAmerica... some stories are truly heart wrenching.

Then i thought, am I not part of the films here? The fact that i go from place to place, am I a kind of perpetual immigrant? I encounter all the problems the immigrants face, from the angle of the parent to the children to whatver role the immigrants played... i can feel the complexities of their situation.

Much more interesting than fiction film. One of the best dvds i found recently.
