Marilyn vos Savant - hightest IQ on earth - an American

http://www.parade.com/articles/editions/2007/edition_12-23-2007/Ask_Marilyn

Very interesting questions and answers. For amusement away from chatters in sl. :)

documentary on landscape, Still Life,

Paysages manufacturés **

Documentaire (1h 26min)
De Jennifer Baichwal
Avec Edward Burtynsky

======================

A National Film Board of Canada full feature Documentary on new landscape (mainly focused on urbanisation of China) - the landscape of garbage dumps, in China, in Bangeldash, on the changing landscape of urbanisation - the film maker took photos some interviewing questions, and displayed the large phtoos. he makes no comment, because he doesnt want to influence and put a right or wrong to the situation, but he shows.

The same landscape - urbanisation and people having to rip out entirely towns to make way for the three gorges dam - has been treated in Still Life. Here the movie maker is Chinese, and trained as an artist. He has a much deeper feeling, and nuanced in his choice of questions, and the building up of moods from the unsaid. This movie is poetic, slow, sad, nostalgic. Whereas the first film, I saw a photographer trying to make well composed photographs. The first one is all on appearance, and the second one not only in appearance,he has depth.

Everyone can make some film set in China and it will always look interesting... but who could give you a poem, with memorable nuances?

Lust Caution, Joan Chen, Tony Leung :: Bai Ling and her interview

Lust, Caution ***

script based on Eileen Changs short story Love Caution
Lee Ang (director)

So I am watching this movie, Love Caution. Eileen Changs short story. I have a vague memory of having read it. Lee Ang makes a very careful rendering of the person.
But I am not convinced that - not because of Lee Ang - but the story itself, how could a college girl, naive pretend that she is a rich merchants wife? In real life, it just doesnt work. And we are talking about spying activities - but this is the fault of the script story... maybe.

To make it convincing, i think we cannot go by the skeletal outline of a short story - we need a lot more fleshing out of details. Just you try to go to one of those Mahjong game sessions with 3 taitais... unless you are an exuberant personality - you can get away with everything because that is in your style. Otherwise, if you had to play a subtle low key - just like the other taitai figure - it is very very hard. The precision of such a role is almost impossible unless the girl is very much a taitai want to be from the beginning - then she would have been practicing this role in her mind way before becoming a spy. Then she switches back to being a plain innocent girl... not believable. It is not in the acting, it is the story itself. Too sketchy, maybe its ok to do a piece of theatre but not a movie. Movies depends on details, and this movie is not convincing.

The star is pretty enough, cute. The right face and physique for the role.

Tony Leung apparently had to play his part without "electricity" from his eyes, because he is supposed to be a very hard spy. It just happens that he fell for this one fresh faced girl. Hmmm, not an easy role. He was also not convincing as a hard spy. His eyes are not hard enough to play this kind of figure.

Joan Chen plays the taitai role well, I think finally, all the Chinese actor, actresses they may have gone to America, and played in various Hollywood roles, in the end, they are happiest to play in a Chinese movie. I am not saying the quality of the movie matters, but somehow I feel that they are truly happy making the movie, this happiness is not the same as playing in a Hollywood movie.

The script is flawed.

I re read the foreword of the short story in the original Eileen Chang story, she argued that as a spy, an unprofessional one they are just bumbling students. Nowhere near the real killer spies. I think she is also correct in writing such a story. But translating a short story into a movie, I see that it is insufficient to just shoot it as is.

Where are the details ? As Eileen Chang is a very important writer, maybe Lee Ang is shooting this movie without adding details - due to the respect for Chang?

Curious, its just somehow cardboard like.

I saw an interview of Bai Ling with a small tv show. She is so smart, she made sure that she is entertaining, charming, and at the same time, she knows what is the responsibility of an entertainer, and she lets the audience know too. She smiles and says, oooh, they are just making fun of me... but thats ok, as long as everybody is happy, its my gift to you. She says smoothly.

Thats so professional. So smart, like a hand in a glove. Everything fits.

Old sim, Deltango, Cade, Lzz, Hanako

Deltango wanted a Swannjie Postcard, so I am waiting for her message. She paid but no message coming yet. However I visited her sim, Maroon. An old sim. It is quite intersting, just here and there places and objects for fun. Vaste large, no much people around. Deltango has a huge treehouse... magnificent also sparsely furnished with oriental styled furnishing.

Lzz tped me to his home, a crack house. The first one i have been to in sl, we see lots of them in Amercian movies. So here it is, a hole dug into the sand with a brick building, a la crack house. Hahhahah. It is consistent everything inside with toilet signs etc etc. The crack house came with all the scenario sets made. Lzz installs this giant size flat screen wall tv.... not exactly crack anymore. But crack house as a style of living. He tells me of his love - lasted exactly one week - but he really loved her, but it was not meant to be...

I guess thats what speed dating means, quickie quickie.

Hanako showed me her latest fastest plane for tourists 10, at a time. The plane has her company logo on it. It was 3am in Tokyo and shes up fussing with the sl tourism business. I tried a free fall machine (Free Foll)

Actually, the entire sl is a sandbox that is why everything changes so fast. And there are temporary sandbox - free - and more permanent sandbox thats land - the neighbours changes and neighbourhood changes very fast - unless the owner never comes in - because what is sl? It is a place where you experiment and meet people.

If a place never changes - like a shop without anything new - no need to visit!

Sl is ideal for activities that requires changes. Not for stable installations. Because a 2D website, with or without visitors seems anyway flat, like a book - its gets read sometimes and no one expects the book to be always read. But a 3D construction if no one comes, and its always the same, we can feel the emptiness. Absence of human presences, that makes a place desolate no matter how pretty. Sl is ideal for preservation of prettiness though, becasue there is really no dust problem, you just pay monthly fees and its stays there, spic and span for everyone to see. :)

postcards, what someone told me

this postcard idea has been applauded - brilliant etc etc

in fact, 800lindens is big money in sl, but since its a real object, and non-repeatable hand made analogue card. Its really not at all expensive, its a small price that anybody could afford in real life.

So in this special niche, who would buy such a card?

The Ping test.

People worried about privacy will not buy. (even though its just ANY real address and not a personal address thats needed)
People who keeps themselves in sl and thinks in terms of sl economics will not buy. (They temporarily suspend their rl lives)

People want to sent as open play thing to girlfriend boyfriend in sl buy
People want to sent to sl secret girlfriend boyfriend can buy
People wanting to give a surprise and smile will buy
People who likes new art experiment will buy
People who sees the charm of old snail mail handwritten cards will buy
People who wants a real souvenir from Paris will buy
People with a business sense will promote and buy

People who wants to get a piece of a numbered piece of mail art will buy
People who has a human sense - will buy

A friend dropped in today, she told this:
She thinks around 25% of internet online users are, terminally ill, or handicapped, or simply unemployed. Internet lets all this go un-noticed, and they could freely enjoy emotional attachments and when someone goes away, disappears, never log on again, the hurt is real hurt. She said that i must be careful, that without knowing, I might be hurting someone and not know it.

I explain that, in reality - everyone needs to grow, and people all grow at various speed - there comes a point where two people do not share the same mental space anymore that is why someone leaves. When someone leaves, it does not mean "rejection" it just means, for the survival of the person for the person to really be living, that person needs to breathe and go away - they need room to grow.

So, dont take every departure as rejection, every point are meeting points and departure points. Staying would not have any meaning beyond reassurance for the one who wants to stay together.

Its a tough moment when it comes to a turning point, in virtual life as in real life.
